Lot Essay

In 1912 Richardson and Gill submitted a design for a competition in The Builder magazine for the building of the final part of the Quadrant, Regent Street. The competition was held following the resignation of Norman Shaw (1831-1912) who had been working on the development for over a decade and although the competition was won by Richardson and Gill, their design was but one of several put forward to the Government Appointed Committee. No agreement was reached and further designs were submitted. Finally in 1916, Reginald Blomfield's (1856-1942) proposal was accepted, however building did not begin until 1923.
The watercolour of Guildford Cathedral was part of a competition entry by Richardson and Gill for the building of a new cathedral. The commission was won by Sir Edward Maufe (1883-1974) in 1936 but construction was interrupted by the Second World War and the cathedral was not consecrated until 1961.

We are grateful to John Harris and Charles Hind for their assistance with cataloguing the group of architectural drawings.
