Lot Essay

Lefeuvre dates this landscape to the last phase of de Loutherbourg's career and notes that the vigorous brushwork and treatment of the rocks and vegetation is characteristic of the artist's work after 1797. He adds that this could be the work exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1809 (no. 17), described as 'Landscape with waterfall, an evening after the rain' (see Lefeuvre, op. cit, p. 336, no. M. 138). The escarpment depicted bears a striking resemblance to that in the landscape entitled Dovedale in Derbyshire, now in the York Art Gallery.
