A CASED SET OF TEN CIRCULAR PATINATED LEAD 'NAPOLEON MEDALS'
WORKSHOP OF BERTRAND ANDRIEU (1761-1822), EARLY 19TH CENTURY
All relief cast and marked 'ANDRIEU F.' or 'ANDRIEU FECIT', comprising: two large medallions, glazed: one depicting a sinister profile bust of Emperor Napoleon; the other sinister portrait busts of Emperor Napoleon and Empress Marie-Louise with illegible pencil inscription to the reverse; two medium-sized medallions, glazed: 'SEIGE DE LA BASTILLE PRISE PAR LES CITOYENS DE LA VILLE DE PARIS LE 14 JUET 1789 No 1'; and 'ARRIVEE DU ROI A PARIS LE 6 OCTOBRE 1789 No 2' inscribed to the reverse in pencil 'These medals were given to Henry R. Howard 1825 - by his loving papa'; and six small medallions: 'BONAPARTE PREMIER CONSUL DE LA REPUBLIQUE FRAN BATAILLE DE MARINGO LE XXV PRAIRIAL AN VIII AN X' with a dexter profile bust of Emperor Napoleon amidst millitary trophies above an image of the battle; 'NAPOLEON EMPEREUR' with a dexter profile bust of Napoleon showing ceremonial robes to his upper torso; 'PASSAGE DU BERNARD LE XXV FLOREAL AN VIII' with sinister depiction of Emperor Napoleon on horseback in mountainous terrain; 'JOSEPHINE IMP. ET. REINE' with a dexter profile bust of Empress Josephine; 'MARIE LOUISE IMPERATRICE' with dexter profile bust of Empress Marie Louise; 'NAPOLEON EMP. ET. ROI.' with sinister profile bust of Emperor Napoleon, all unfinished to the reverse; together with a velvet-lined case bound as a book in gilt-tooled calf-binding, marked 'NAPOLEON MEDALS BY ANDRIEU' to the spine, cover detached
The large medallions: 5½ in. (14 cm.) diameter
The medium medallions: 3 5/16 in. (8.5 cm.) diameter
The small medallions: 2 11/16 in. (6.8 cm.) diameter
The case: 14 x 10¾ x 2 in. (35.5 x 27.3 x 5 cm.)
