LOGGAN, David (1635-c.1700). Oxonia Illustrata. Oxford: at the Sheldonian Theatre, 1675. 2° (427 x 302mm). Engraved throughout; title, privilege, dedication to Charles II, introduction, index and 40 plates, all by Loggan, all mounted on stubs. (Some neat marginal repairs, some plates with mostly marginal dampstain, some plates with light browning in the gutter near the foot, plate 27 with some wear and backed, some marginal tears, folding plate bound in two parts, some plates with short marginal wormtrack.) Early 19th-century calf, flat spine in compartments filled with blind-tooled circles, red morocco label, the author's name in gilt at the foot, marbled endpapers, edges sprinkled red (joints starting, corners rubbed, spine ends chipped, some staining). Provenance: Montague Cholmeley, Bart (1772-1831, MP for Grantham; bookplate by AW).

'The Oxonia Illustrata was evidently intended as a companion to Wood's History and Antiquities of the University of Oxford, published in 1674, for the table of contents gives, opposite each plate, a reference to the page of that work where the history of the building represented is to be found; and the two books were given together by the university to distinguished visitors.'
