PERAU, Gabriel Louis Calabre (1700-1767). Description Historique de l'Hôtel Royal des Invalides. Paris: Guillaume Desprez, 1756. 2° (439 x 282mm). Half-title, title printed in red and black, 108 engraved plates, including frontispiece and 31 double-page, engraved head- and tail-pieces. (Text slightly cockled, minor dust soiling to upper margin.) Contemporary French mottled calf, triple-rule gilt border, with fleur-de-lys gilt-stamp at each corner, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco labels lettered in gilt, edges gilt (extremities rubbed, joints cracked, head and tail of spine worn). Provenance: Chrétien-François de Lamoignon (Bibliotheca Lamoniana label) -- Thomas de Grey, 2nd Earl de Grey (d. 1859) (Wrest Park armorial bookplate) -- Ivor A.B. Ferguson (armorial bookplate).
A HANDSOME COPY WITH FINE PROVENANCE, SHOWING LES INVALIDES IN ALL ITS ARCHITECTURAL GLORY. From the collection of Lord de Grey, first President of the RIBA, whose building of Wrest Park in the French style was certainly influenced by this book. Millard French, 132; Cohen-de Ricci 788 (mistakenly calling for 187 plates).
