The present panel is a version of Harlow's portrait of West, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1815 (no. 112) and engraved by Joseph Jenkins in 1829. The canvas portrayed next to the sitter shows the figures of Christ, Pilate and the chief Priest from West's Christ Rejected (1814; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts), which the artist painted as a sequel to his celebrated Christ Healing the Sick, now in the Tate Gallery, London.
