Lot Essay

Bélanger, whose career took him throughout Europe and to the Caribbean, here shows Sir Jacob Acworth's Putney Bridge, which was opened in 1729. Until the construction of Battersea Bridge in 1771, Putney Bridge was the only bridge crossing the Thames between London Bridge and Kingston Bridge.
