According to Nagata Seiji, Hokusai used this seal between Bunsei 6 and Bunsei 11 (1823-28).

Hokusai was a household name even in his own lifetime. We know him for the wide range of books and prints he produced for the commercial market, but he offered paintings--deluxe commissions--for his wealthiest clientele, often with witty themes.

The album has the Hosukaku no in seal of Kobayashi Bunshichi, the famous dealer/collector (see lot 620).
