Meiji period (late 19th century), stamped on the base Kiryu Kosho Kaisha sei (Made by The First Japanese Manufacturing and Trading Company) beneath the "Double-mountain" mark of the company
The gourd form with steep shoulders and slightly everted broad mouth, cast, carved and inlaid in gold, silver, shakudo, copper and gilt, the vase representing Summer and Autumn with a dragonfly, autumn grasses and water plantains, mouth rim cast with arabesques; seal on base

Lot Essay

A semi-governmental corporation, Kiryu Kosho Kaisha (The First Japanese Manufacturing and Trading Company) was founded in 1873 after the great success of the Japanese exhibit at the Vienna World Exhibition. The company employed a number of leading bronze artists, such as Suzuki Chokichi (1848-1919), to produce purely decorative bronzes for the international market.
