Lot Essay

The stamp is that of François-Honoré-Georges and George II Jacob between 1803-1813.

These six chairs formed part of a large suite of seat furniture which is recorded in an inventory drawn up after Lafitte's death on June 4, 1844:

Jacques Lafitte was born in Bayonne in 1767. First a notary's clerk and then an associate of the banker, Perregaux, he later became a governor of the Banque de France and president of the conseil et ministère des finances. He lived first in a hôtel in the rue Chaussee d'Antin and subsequently in the former hôtel of the banker Laborde. He also owned the Château de Maisons outside of Paris. His collections subsequently passed to his daughter, the princesse Ney who was married to one of Napoleon's most famous generals.
