Lot Essay
The portrait on the present cup was painted by Etienne-Charles Le Guay after a portrait of Empress Marie-Louise painted by Jean-Baptiste Isabey. A portrait miniature by Isabey, which is possibly the original after which this piece was painted, was sold Christie's, London, 27-28 November 2012, lot 327.
For a green-ground example with a silver-gilt handle in the collection of the museum at Sèvres - Cité de la céramique, painted by Mme Victoire Jaquote after the same portrait bu Isabey, see Pierre Verlet, Sèvres, Le XVIIIe Siècle , 1953, pl. 106, p. 225. See also the blue-ground tasse 'Jasmin' with its saucer, the cup dated 1811 but with otherwise identical marks, the empress depicted in court dress and wearing a parure of rubies, sold Christie's New York, 21-22 October 2010, lot 641.
The present cup is incised tt for the repareur garnisseur Charles Thévenot fils aîné, recorded working at the factory from 1787 to 1826.
