Lot Essay

The portrait on the present cup was painted by Etienne-Charles Le Guay after a portrait of Empress Marie-Louise painted by Jean-Baptiste Isabey. A portrait miniature by Isabey, which is possibly the original after which this piece was painted, was sold Christie's, London, 27-28 November 2012, lot 327.

For a green-ground example with a silver-gilt handle in the collection of the museum at Sèvres - Cité de la céramique, painted by Mme Victoire Jaquote after the same portrait bu Isabey, see Pierre Verlet, Sèvres, Le XVIIIe Siècle, 1953, pl. 106, p. 225. See also the blue-ground tasse 'Jasmin' with its saucer, the cup dated 1811 but with otherwise identical marks, the empress depicted in court dress and wearing a parure of rubies, sold Christie's New York, 21-22 October 2010, lot 641.

The present cup is incised tt for the repareur garnisseur Charles Thévenot fils aîné, recorded working at the factory from 1787 to 1826.
