A rare 18th-century Culpeper-type compound monocular microscope, unsigned of Matthew Loft pattern, possibly by *, the brass eye-piece with dust slide, lignum vitae upper body tube, green vellum body with incised gold lines and inscribed 1-5 to correspond with settings for the fine objectives, the ivory and lignum vitae mounted outer body-tube covered with pink stained ray-skin, sprung stage slide-holder, shaped stage with mounting for bull's-eye condenser, the body-tube, stage and octagonal ebonised plinth base with accessory drawer united by inswept lacquered-brass tripod support on diamond-shaped feet, with six objectives in stained horn carriers, ivory sliders and other items in pyramid-shaped oak carrying case with accessory draw in base, with brass loop handle and shaped excutheous 20½in.in.
