A SMALL YAOZHOU CELADON CARVED SAUCER DISH
NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY (960-1127)
The dish has shallow rounded sides and is carved in the interior with a whorl motif formed by overlapping waves detailed with rouletting, all under a slightly greyish-green glaze that continues onto the flat base and ends at the edge of a broad unglazed circle that surrounds the small, glazed countersunk center.

Compare the Yaozhou celadon dish carved with a similar wave design illustrated by R. Krahl in Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, vol. 1, London, 1994, p. 233, no. 420, and another similar example illustrated in The Masterpieces of Yaozhou Ware, Tokyo, 1997, p. 36, no. 41.
