A LONGQUAN CELADON BUDDHIST SHRINE
EARLY MING DYNASTY, 14TH/15TH CENTURY
The figure of Guanyin is left in the biscuit and shown seated on a ledge within a grotto framed by scrolling clouds that issue from the moon above and support a bird to one side and a vase to the other above two acolytes standing on clouds amidst carved waves from which rises a carved lotus. There are two circular apertures on the reverse.

Compare a shrine of larger size in the Illustrated Catalogue of the Tokyo National Museum: Chinese Ceramics, II, Tokyo, 1990, p. 20, no. 520, and another illustrated in Porcelains from the Tianjin Municipal Museum, Hong Kong, 1993, no. 68. See, also, the two shrines of this type and comparable size sold at Christies, one in New York, 29 March 2006, lot 90, the other in Hong Kong, 28 November 2012, lot 2285.
