AN UNUSUAL BLUE AND WHITE FACETED VASE, HU
18TH CENTURY
Each side of the faceted body, which is of rectangular section, is painted with a riverscape in a panel, and the facets of the canted shoulder with further landscape panels incorporating pine trees, lingzhi and rocks, all within 'fishroe' borders. The flaring neck, decorated with bands of flower scroll, key fret and plantain leaves, is flanked by a pair of angular scroll handles, and the pedestal foot is decorated with fruit sprays.

Lot Essay

The 'fish roe' borders found on the present vase are very unusual, but appear to be found on a small group of wares dating to the second half of the eighteenth century. A small square-section teapot in the Victoria and Albert Museum, dated to 1770-1775, also decorated with landscape scenes within the same 'fish roe' borders, is illustrated by R. Kerr and L. Mengoni, Chinese Export Ceramics, London, 2011, p. 29. no. 27.
