The vases are finely painted in mirror image with quatrefoil panels depicting bearded figures engaged in scholarly activities including examining a scroll, inscribing a cliff face, and playing weiqi in landscape settings. The panels are enclosed within gilt borders and reserved on a coral-red ground embellished with gilt-dragon roundels. The bases are inscribed with apocryphal iron-red Qianlong seal marks reserved on a turquoise ground.
