A RARE BROWN LACQUER PETAL-LOBED BOX AND COVER
SOUTHERN SONG/YUAN DYNASTY, 13TH-14TH CENTURY
The cover has a flat top surrounded by thirteen rounded lobes that curve downwards to the upright sides, and the box is of similar shape and raised a thin foot of corresponding outline. The exterior is covered in reddish-brown lacquer, and the interior with an olive-brown lacquer.

Lot Essay

Compare the silver box and cover and qingbai box and cover dated to the Southern Song dynasty, of similar petal-lobed form, but lacking the foot, illustrated in The Colors and Forms of Song and Yuan China - Featuring Lacquerwares, Ceramics, and Metalwares, Nezu Institute of Fine Arts, Tokyo, 2004, nos. 34 and 35, respectively.
