A GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF AMITAYUS
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
The slender figure is shown seated in dhyanasana on a plinth with waisted foliate corners draped in front with a long cloth with a flower head at its center. The hands are in dhyana mudra, and the figure wears a jeweled necklace and robes draped over the left shoulder leaving the right shoulder exposed. The hair is pulled up into an elaborate coiffure behind a five-point foliate crown. The number shiwu (15) is cast on the underside of the base, and three illegible characters are cast on one side of the interior of the lower border of the base.

Lot Essay

The casting style of the present figure, and its distinctive throne, indicate that it belongs to a group of similar figures, most of which bear cyclical dates along the bottom of the rectangular frame of the throne, produced to commemorate birthday celebrations of the Emperor Qianlong and the Empress Dowager.
