A PAIR OF HONGMU 'SOUTHERN OFFICIAL'S HAT' ARMCHAIRS, NANGUANMAOYI
19TH CENTURY
Each has a shaped top rail continuing to curved back rails and is supported on the slightly S-curved backsplat carved with a stylized shou character in a shaped medallion. The curving armrests are supported by serpentine standing stiles and terminating in the front posts. The front legs are joined by a shaped apron carved with ruyi scrolls and archaistic elements and further joined below by stepped stretchers. The footrest is supported on a narrow, plain apron.

Lot Essay

An almost identical armchair (110 cm. high) dating to the mid-to-late Qing dynasty is in the Capital Museum, Beijing, illustrated by Tian Jiaqing. Classic Chinese Furniture of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1996, p. 94, cat. 26.
