AN ELABORATELY AND FINELY CARVED BAMBOO BRUSH POT, BITONG
18TH/19TH CENTURY
Of cylindrical form and raised on three shallow bracket supports, the sides of the brush pot are finely and deeply carved with a continuous scene of scholars and attendants shown at leisurely activities in a setting of terraces and a pavilion nestled amidst bamboo, pine, and willow trees, in a rocky landscape. On one side scholars are seated at a table playing weiqi, while two scholars examine a scroll behind them. On another side, attendants gather water from a stream flowing below a pavilion.
