Lot Essay

The poetic inscription, [] Wei jun zi xing, de bi gu ren feng, may be translated as:

"Embody the character of the man of complete virtue,
Match the fashion of the ancient people."

A closely related blue glass bottle from the Mrs. Galia Baylin Collection, similarly enameled and inscribed with a gengyin cyclical date, probably corresponding to 1770, but of slightly different form, was sold at Sotheby's, New York, October 3, 1980, lot 87 and again at Christie's New York, 23 March 1995, lot 177.

A similar blue glass bottle, enameled with lotus on one side, was sold at Sotheby Parke Bernet, New York, 1 June 1977, lot 3, from the collection of E. Lucille Parker. See, also, another very similar blue glass snuff bottle inscribed with a Guyue Xuan mark, and enameled on both sides with lotus instead of the poetic inscription and cyclical date found on the present example, sold at Christie's Paris, 7 December 2007, lot 79.
