A FINELY CARVED RED-OVERLAY GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE
1730-1830
Of tapering cylindrical form, the bottle is well carved through the semi-transparent ruby overlay to the opaque white ground with roses and lingzhi fungus growing amid rockwork.
2 11/16 in. (6.9 cm.) high, jadeite stopper

Lot Essay

A red-overlay white glass bottle of similar form and with a red mouth rim, but carved with a qilin standing on formalized waves, is illustrated by Moss, Graham, Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles, The Mary and George Bloch Collection, Vol. 5, Part 2, Glass, Hong Kong, 2008, pp. 486-87, no. 902, where it is dated 1736-1780.
