A RARE PAIR OF CLOISONNE ENAMEL AND GILT-BRONZE OCTAGONAL CENSERS AND COVERS
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736 - 1795)
Each octagonal body is raised on four tall legs decorated with archaistic scrolls below gilt-bronze dragon masks with open mouths that appear to grasp the bottom of the censer, which is decorated on the flat underside with a ribbon-tied wan emblem surrounded by foliate scroll and four bats, while the faceted sides of the censer are decorated with the Eight Buddhist Emblems (bajixiang), and with four gilt-bronze mask and loose ring handles, all below lotus sprays on the short, everted neck. Each facet of the domed cover is decorated with an openwork, gilt-metal panel of one of the Eight Buddhist Emblems amidst clouds, below a narrow ruyi band at the base of the tall faceted knob decorated with archaistic scroll. Each censer has a removable metal liner.
