A SMALL CARVED RED LACQUER KANG CABINET
18TH/19TH CENTURY
The cabinet is made in imitation of a two-door cupboard and hat chest. The lower doors, which are above a narrow drawer carved with fish leaping from crashing waves, and open to reveal a pair of shallow upper drawers, are carved with five-clawed dragons pursuing flaming pearls against a ground of further cresting waves, all below two further dragons on the upper doors. The sides and top are carved with diaper pattern, and the back is covered in black lacquer.

Lot Essay

Miniature cabinets of this type were made for display on a kang, which served as a seat in the day and a bed at night.
