Lot Essay
It is very rare to find a jade bead carved in high relief with a sinuous chilong. They are more commonly found on jade sword fittings of the Eastern Zhou/Han period, such as those illustrated in The Complete Collection of Jades Unearthed in China - 1 - Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Beijing, 2005, p. 189. An ovoid bead carved in relief with a chilong, from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections, dated to the 3rd-1st century BC, was sold at Christie's New York, 14 September 2009, lot 64.
