The first line is taken from the poem, Bamboo, by the late Tang dynasty poet Li Jianxun. The second line is taken from the poem, Ode to Chrysanthemums, by another Tang dynasty poet, Luo Yin.

A WHITE JADE SHAPED RECTANGULAR PLAQUE

One side is carved in a linear, painterly style with bamboo beside an inscription, qiong jie gao chui su feng zhi (the bamboo grows high up into the sky with sprouting leaves), and on the reverse with chrysanthemum and a bee, as well as a further inscription, zai chu bu rong yi yu qi (the chrysanthemums grow without leaning against the jade stair steps), all below a stylized mask incorporating lingzhi. The semi-translucent stone is of even color and is well polished.
