The line is taken from the famous poem, Pipa Xing, by the Tang master Bai Juyi, in which he describes a chance encounter with a female pipa player on the Yangtze River.

A WHITE JADE RECTANGULAR PENDANT PLAQUE
18TH/19TH CENTURY
The plaque is carved in low relief on one side with a woman playing a lute while seated on a stool on a sampan floating in a river landscape, and on the reverse with another sampan on a river below a seven-character inscription, wei jian jiang xin qiu yue bai (only the white reflection of the autumn moon is seen at the heart of the river), followed by two seals, Zigang.
