Cassandre, leading member of the four artists dubbed 'the Musketeers' because of their innovative role in 1920s and 1930s Parisian poster design, produced this poster to advertise the publication of Paul Morand's novel Champions du Monde.
The object is placed centre-stage, oversized and reduced to its minimalist components. Cassandre concerns himself here with light by using a nocturnal lighting effect and spotlighting the book in the image, thus creating rich colour contrasts.
By representing a bespectacled anonymous reader in the act of reading, Cassandre creates a highly innovative narrative to draw in the viewer and stimulate the imagination. True to his dictum of placing text at the centre of a composition, Cassandre here keeps text as a sole means of ornament in the work.
