Lot Essay

Regarded as outstanding for its adherence to the principles of the New Typography, this poster is seen as the ultimate development of Tschichold's early period: asymmetrical, in Akzidenz (condensed) lowercase throughout (Hollis in Swiss Graphic Design, 2006).
Tschichold used a special technique known as rainbow printing or Irisdruck for this poster. The colours visible were printed in a single run through the press and mixed to give the rainbow effect during the printing process. As such, no poster is exactly the same.
