Lot Essay

Cassandre understood the potency and potential of the lithography medium and in this work amalgamates the Futurists' preoccupation with the speed and power of the modern machine with the elegance of Art Deco. The train's steam and gleaming tubular body and wheels give an impression of modernity and are represented in exaggerated linear perspective to heighten the sense of speed. Cassandre conveys a feeling of excitement in the novelty of the new technology as well as complete faith in its function fitting with the optimism of the 1920s and progressivity of the Art Deco style.
