It is vital that the poster artist should always begin with the text and that he should place it, as far as possible, in the centre of his composition. The design must revolve around the text and not the other way round (A.M. Cassandre in The Avant Garde Applied, p.26)

To further exaggerate the purity of the forms, he used a pneumatic airbrush to apply the brown colour and gradated grey background to the lithographic stone, 'introducing an element of subtle tonal control beyond the capability of a more direct means of drawing or painting with brushes'.
