Lot Essay

The Théâtre Pigalle was located in Paris and opened on June 20, 1929, financed by Henri de Rothschild and coordinated by his son Philippe. This brochure was published for the opening and the cover depicts one of two well-known posters designed by Jean Carlu emphasizing its machine-age image.
The preface is a copy of a hand-written text by Jean Cocteau and the brochure depicts photographs by Germaine Krull showing the interior of Téâtre Pigalle. The architects, Charles Siclis, Henri Just and Pierre Blum, were sent through Europe to research the latest technical developments in theatre design, to fulfil the de Rothschild's ambition to construct the most modern theatre in the world.
