Lot Essay

The present work comes from the studio at Charleston. The piece of cloth behind the vase of flowers is a printed textile with the head of an actor by the Japanese artist Sharaku. Grant painted it several times in still-lifes and interiors. (see R. Shone, Bloomsbury Portraits: Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant and Their Circle, London, 1993, pl. 186, p. 252)
