Of typical elongated form, the polychrome painted decoration showing a continuous narrative to either sides, the top depicting a crowd visiting and paying homage to an Armenian or Orthodox priest, the sides showing the Shaykh San'an and the Christian maiden, the tip with kneeling figures in roundels flanked by angels, the base with rose sprays within three cusped medallions on a ground decorated with scrolling foliate tendrils inhabited by avian motifs

Lot Essay

A qalamdan with similar decoration, signed by Ja'far bin Najaf 'Ali and painted in the style of Muhammad Isma'il, sold at Christie's South Kensington, 22 april 2013, lot 201.

This pencase is painted in a very similar style to two other examples signed by Muhammad Isma'il - one of which sold at Christie's, 26 April 2005, lot 203, the other is in the Nasser D. Khalili Collection (B.W. Robinson and Tim Stanley, Lacquer of the Islamic Lands, London, 1997, part 2, pp.22-29).
