Lot Essay

Sayyid 'Ali Riza Khan Jawahir Raqam al-Tabrizi, came from Iran to India and was employed by Aurangzeb to teach calligraphy to the princes of the Royal Family. He was appointed curator of the Imperial Library and died in Deccan in 1683 AD (Scott O'Connor, An Eastern Library, Glasgow, 1920, cat.52).

A calligraphic panel, signed Mir 'Alikhan Jawahir Naqqash Bashi and dated to the 8th reignal year of Aurangzeb's reign sold at Christie's South Kensington, 1 October 2012, lot 83. Two other panels, probably by the same scribe are in the British Museum (1974,0617,0.21.16 and 1974,0617,0.21.48).
