A GERMAN PARCEL-GILT SILVER TANKARD
APPARENTLY UNMARKED, PERHAPS BRUNSWICK, LOWER SAXONY, DATED 1578
Cylindrical, the spreading foot cast with foliage within scrolls on a matted ground, the hinged cover cast and chased with three cartouches, depicting Christ in the manger, Christ rising from the tomb and a martyrdom, perhaps that of St. James the Great, each cast in high relief and surrounded by cast and chased winged putto, grotesque masks and birds, centred by a medallion engraved with two coats-of-arms accolé, the front further engraved with two coat-of-arms, flanked by three further arms on each side, with engraved foliage and scroll strapwork above and below, the handle chased with foliage and cast and chased with figures, with figure cast thumbpiece, prick engraved inside with two coats-of-arms accolé

The arms on the cover are those of von Veltheim accolé with those of von Salder, for Achatz von Veltheim (1538-1588) and his wife Margarete von Salder (1545-1615) whom he married in 1568.
The arms on the front are those of von Veltheim with the initials AVV, dated 1578 for Achatz von Veltheim (1538-1588) and those of von Salder for Margarete von Salder (1545-1615) within a ribbon inscribed 'Margreta v Salder Achatz v Velthem [sic] Sein Elige Havsfraw'.
The arms to the left are those of von der Rutenberg for Ilse von der R[a]utenberg, Achtaz's maternal grandmother; von der Oberhusen for Ilse von der Oberh[a]usen Achataz's paternal grandmother and von der Suigelde almost certainly for Adelheid von der Schwichdeldt (c.1513-1545), Achataz's mother.
The arms to the right are those of de von der Asseborg for Jacobe von der Asseburg (1507-1570), Margareta's mother; von de Steinberg for Jutta von Steinberg (1457-1520), Margareta's paternal granmother and von de Westfal for Eulalia von Westfal (d.1511), Margareta's maternal grandmother.
The arms inside the cover are those of von Rutenberg impaled by another, dated 1653.
