Lot Essay
The figure types seen here closely resemble those on a painting ascribed to Faizullah formerly in the William K. Ehrenfeld Collection and now in the Collection of Eva and Konrad Seitz (published in Daniel Ehnbom, Indian Miniatures, 1985, cat.no.33, pp.82-83). The sidelong glance of the princess' companion here as well as the long-nosed profile of the princess herself can be closely paralleled in the Seitz painting. In his description of the Seitz painting, Seyller describes the way in which Faizullah habitually varies his females' complexions, something which is evident in the painting offered here (John Seyller and Konrad Seitz, Mughal and Deccan Paintings, exhibition catalogue, Zurich, 2010, no.25, p.86).
