Lot Essay

Nawab Nizam 'Ali Khan, Asaf Jah II, ruled over Hyderabad and the Deccan for over 40 years, from 1762 to 1803. His son and successor, Nawab Sikander Jah, Asaf Jah III, ruled between 1803 and 1829. A painting depicting him giving audience to four ministers is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (IS.107-1951, Swallow, Deborah and John Guy eds, Arts of India: 1550-1900, London, 1990, cat.102, ill.120). It certainly comes from the same album as the present work and the two paintings were very probably painted by the same artist.
