Rumi's famous mystical poetry, Persian manuscript on gold-speckled paper, 618ff. plus five fly-leaves, each folio with 11ll. of very elegant small black nasta'liq script arranged in two columns between black-ruled gold double divisions, main text bordered with further text written diagonally, titles in gold within cartouches, with six finely illuminated gold and polychrome headpieces, colophon of fifth part signed and dated, with numerous seal impressions in Persian and devanagari, with later added owner's note in Persian and English, in fine European stamped brown morocco binding

Lot Essay

Some of the seal impressions, in Persian or in devanagari, found in this manuscript are that of John Romer, one of the governors of Bombay Presidency in the early 19th century. One of his seals is dated 1817; another 1238 (1823-24 AD).

Two added notes in Persian gives the date AH 1066 and AH 1123
