Lot Essay

The tughra mark on this bowl, of which the lower part is illegible, is that of a sultan whose father was named Mustafa. Although Sultan Mahmud I and Sultan 'Uthman III were both sons of Sultan Mustafa II (r. 1695-1703) it is very probable that the sultan whose tughra is on this bowl was Mustafa III's son. Sultan Selim III (r. 1789-1807) is the only son of Mustafa III to have reigned. It is very probable that this bowl was made during his reign.
