JERUSALEM, OTTOMAN PALESTINE, DATED 4 JANUARY 1810
On conical foot, with globular body and flaring rim, the repoussé decoration with three foliated medallions around the body depicting episodes of the life of Christ, the Baptism, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection, a fourth medallion inscribed in Greek, the rim and lower body fluted, with handle
4½in. (11.5cm.) high without handle

Lot Essay

The inscription in one of the medallions give the name and titles of an important clergy official at the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the protosingelos (protosingel) Sofronios. It also gives the date of 4 January 1810.
