CAPTAIN WILLIAM BLIGH (1754-1817)

A Voyage to the South Sea for the purpose of conveying the bread-fruit tree to the West Indies, in His Majesty's ship the Bounty... including an account of the mutiny. London: George Nicol, 1792. 4° (295 x 233mm). Engraved portrait of Bligh and 7 engraved charts, plates and plans, 5 of these folding. (Occasional spotting and minor offsetting as usual, Chart of Bligh's Islands repaired at fold with minor loss to lower margin and to 5mm within the chart itself but not touching image.) Early 19th-century polished calf, gilt fillet and blind anthemion borders to covers, spine stamped in gilt and blind with gilt lettered morocco label, red speckled edges (extremities very lightly rubbed). Provenance: Emily, Marchioness of Lansdowne (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION: THE OFFICIAL ACCOUNT OF THE BOUNTY'S VOYAGE. A particularly handsome copy of 'an extremely important book' (Hill), edited by the historian James Burney, under the direction of Sir Joseph Banks. Looking at the large folding plan of the area of the ship given over to the bread-fruit plants which were collected in Tahiti it is hardly surprising that the crew mutinied after their five month sojourn on the island. Ferguson 125; Hill 135; Wantrup 62a; Sabin 5910.
