Half-titles, large folding engraved map of Rajast'han hand-coloured in outline and loosely inserted, 57 engraved plates (24 present in two states), 2 double-page plates and one folding, 2 folding lithographic plates on one sheet, and 3 letterpress tables (2 of which folding), with errata leaf at end of vol. I. (Small tear to a folding plate.) Contemporary red morocco by J. Wright richly gilt with elaborate tooling, gilt turn-ins and edges (light rubbing). Provenance: John Michael Williams (book label).

AN EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED FIRST EDITION of a classic history of the Rajputs by an Indian soldier, diplomatist and explorer who devoted much of his career to acquiring a unique knowledge of Rajast'han. Forty-nine of the plates, maps, letterpress tables and lithographs correspond to the ones called for in the plate list in each volume, but at the end of volume II there is a suite of 8 extra unpublished plates.
