Lot Essay

The exaggerated proportions of the leg and admittedly unconventional design of this table relates to the labelled work of the Dublin firm of Del Vecchio, variously listed from 1797-1848 (see D. Fitz-Gerald, 'The Dublin Del Vecchios', The Magazine Antiques, October 1981, pp. 910-914). The use of applied symbols appears in furniture designs of the period, such as on the Egyptian revival patterns of Thomas Hope, however the peculiar combination of emblems here including a bovine, chair, cornucopia, frock and meat platter, remains a mystery and may well relate to a secret society or club.
