12o (170 x 101 mm). Half-title. Folding frontispiece and 8 hand-colored engraved plates after Thomas Rowlandson. (Frontispiece torn at folds and repaired on verso, one plate trimmed affecting title.) Later morocco gilt by Riviere, top edge gilt, others uncut (rebacked preserving original spine). Provenance: Robson & Kerslake Booksellers (ticket on pastedown); acquired from Goodspeed's Bookshop, 1975.

FIRST EDITION. Hieronymus Carl Friedrich von Münchhausen (1720-1797), a German nobleman, joined the Russian military and took part in two campaigns against the Ottoman Turks. He had a reputation as a storyteller, often telling tall tales about his adventures; it was this reputation as a storyteller which gave rise to the fully fictionalized literary character named Baron Munchausen.
