12o (141 x 84 mm). Letterpress title and advertisement, 54 hand-colored engraved plates. (A few with marginal manuscript notes, one with marginal tear repaired.) Later blue morocco gilt, edges gilt (hinges renewed). Provenance: acquired from Bromer Booksellers, 1988.

FIRST EDITION. Rowland's Characteristic Sketches of the Lower Orders was issued by Samuel Leigh as a separate work in 1820 and then incorporated into Leigh's New Picture of London between 1824 and 1825. The plates are related to Rowlandson's Cries of London series of 1799, and describe the everyday activities lf the "lower orders" of London society. This issue lacking printed date on title-page.
