8o (161 x 96 mm). Stipple-engraved frontispiece by T.B. Brown after George Romney, printed in five colors. Contemporary blue calf gilt (some minor rubbing). Provenance: H. Cotes (1821 inscription on flyleaf); acquired from Habe, 1993.
Later edition, following the first edition of 1781, but the first to include the color-printed frontispiece. Romney's painting was first engraved in mezzotint by J.R. Smith in 1782, who entitled the work "Evelina," but quoted from the same verse from Hayley's poem inscribed on this frontispiece. Abbey Life 243; Joan Friedman, Color Printing in England, 31.
