4o (218 x 171 mm). Wood engraved frontispiece with color border, additional color title, 12 wood engraved plates, color borders throughout. (Some occasional pale spotting.) Publisher's pink cloth gilt, edges gilt (corners slightly worn). Provenance: HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW (1807-1882), American poet and educator (gift inscription from James T. Fields); acquired from Goodspeed's Book Shop, 1982.

INSCRIBED BY JAMES T. FIELDS TO HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW in pencil on the verso of the front free endpaper: "To W.W.L. from J.F.T." and with Longfellow's pencil note: "In Quaritch's catalogue marked 3.3.0." James T. Fields, of the Boston publishing firm Ticknor & Fields, published many of Longfellow's works. This edition of Sakoontalá has been called by Ruari McLean "The most lavish of oriental illuminated books The borders on the ordinary pages were printed in four colours: there is a title-page, at the end of the Introduction, of extraordinary richness, and numerous other decorations and borders printed in colours Mr. Stephen Austin was able to achieve, by letterpress, results indistinguishable from chromolithography: one worries how his costs worked out."
