Oblong broadsheets (440 x 600 mm). 32 aquatint plates. Letterpress table. (Lacking title, plates 25, 27 and 31 torn affecting image, plates 9, 18 and 30 with marginal tears all repaired on verso, some occasional light marginal staining.) Contemporary half roan (rubbed). Provenance: Karl Reithmeyer (faint ink stamp in 4 places including margin of plate 1 and 10); Fernand Pouillon ("Artium Genio" bookplate); acquired from Marlborough Rare Books, 1996.
Third edition of this collection of stage designs by "the most highly-regarded German architect of his generation" (RIBA). These include Schinkel's plans for his legendary set for Mozart's Magic Flute (complete set of 8 plates) as well as designs for Vestalin (2), Olympia (5), Undine (1), Don Carlos (1), Athalia (1), Ferdinand Cortez (3), Othello (1), Die Braut von Messian (1) and the Jungfrau von Orleans (2) and others. The Sammlung was first published in parts starting 1819 and very popular throughout the 19th century when it was often reprinted.
