Lot Essay

It is generally accepted that the painter's mark of a script G is that of Claude-Joseph Cardin, recorded as a flower painted at the Vincennes and Sèvres manufactory from 1747-1789. See D. Peters, Decorator and Date Marks on C18th Vincennes and Sèvres Porcelain, London, 1997, p. 21 where he posits that, by default, Cardin seems to be the only suitable candidate for a flower-painter of this caliber with an as yet unconfirmed mark active during this span of over forty years.
